Day 20 (Dave) – Bookends and Breadcrumbs

  • by

I’ve been thinking about my daily bookends — the first five minutes after I wake up, and the last five minutes before I fall asleep. Right now, I start and end my day with doomscrolling. That was the first thing I noticed.

This is one of those default loops that’s not even malicious. It’s just familiar. My phone is right there. My brain is tired. The feed is endless. Like gravity, the pull toward it requires no thought. I liked the idea of playing with possibility and doing a “what-if” thought experiment about what would be possible with ideal habits in place. Particularly, guided meditation at night and in the morning. I’m not actually doing any of it yet. In fact, I’m probably going to go doomscroll as soon as this post is live.

That’s the beauty of this process; there is no forcing of habit change. It’s about playing with the possibility of what a routine could look like, and one that I would choose to follow without having to make myself do it. Something that works not because it’s ideal in theory, but because it’s compatible with how I’m wired. Today I find myself just a little bit more optimistic about what could happen next.
